18:45 Simon Elliot (PMP) – The Tyndall Institute - The REALISE project
Everyone who uses a games console or digital camera is amazed by the greater and greater amounts of data that memory cards and USB flash drives can hold. To store yet more data requires dielectric materials that can cut down the interference between adjacent memory cells. This project developed the dielectric 'LZO', which is zirconium oxide with the addition of just enough lanthanum oxide to ensure an atomic structure that responds strongly to electric fields.
The Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall) was created in 2004 at the initiative of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and University College Cork (UCC) to bring together complementary activities in photonics, electronics and networking research at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC), several UCC academic departments and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT).
19:30 Martin Ballantyne – Executive Director – Friends of Londiani
FOL Ireland is registered charity set up in 2000 by a group of young Cork professionals. It continues to work with development projects in Kenya. Martin will talk about the challenges of running projects staffed by volunteers in the field in Kenya. Martin will also outline future projects and opportunities for volunteering.
