Survey Request - Virtual Teams

By: Daragh Nolan

A request to partake in a survey on virtual teams by Daragh Nolan

Dear Participant,

As part of a Masters Degree in Project Management, I am currently conducting research to investigate if the factors of trust and communication are harder to build in virtual project teams compared to traditional project teams. Your collaboration will be welcome. Participation is voluntary and all data gathered will protect confidentiality and anonymity and any respondent has the right to withdraw at any time. The research findings will be anonymous and confidential and will not refer to company name, organization name or respondent names. There are no known or anticipated risks to participation in this study. The completion of this questionnaire will require approximately 12 minutes of your time. Your participation in this study is much appreciated.

A common theme in the available literature is that there is still much to learn about virtual project teams and how the physical dispersion of the team members compared to traditional project teams affects the team dynamics generally and in particular in relation to trust and communication. This survey asks for your perceptions on issues related to trust, communication and team interactions in a virtual and traditional team environment.

For the purpose of this report  virtual teams are taken to mean teams of people who work across time, space and often organizational boundaries using interactive technology to facilitate communication and collaboration. Traditional project teams are taken to be a traditional single location face to face team environment.

The questionnaire is broken up into four sections:

Theme 1: General information

This section seeks general information on your location of work, industry and experiences

Theme 2:  Project Experience

This section seeks general information on your experience in any project team.

Theme 3: Virtual Project Team Working

The purpose of the questions in this section is to distinguish if you have experience of virtual team working and to gauge a response to the areas of virtual team implementation, setting of goals, trust, communication and benefits

Theme 4: Traditional vs Virtual team comparison

The purpose of this section is to question you, in relation to your experience, in order to distinguish differences between virtual teams and traditional teams in the following areas:

• Goals and Objectives
• Trust
• Communication.
