What does Ireland Chapter of PMI Do?

The Ireland Chapter of PMI is active with programme events, certification, support for those applying for certification and training. And through it members have access to a range of services. The PMI in Ireland has significant experience of getting candidates certified. Membership of the Chapter will keep you in touch with the developments, techniques and tools, standards and growth of project management as a professional discipline worldwide.

How do I apply for Certification?

You may try out some example questions at the PMI web site. Certification exams are co-ordinated by the PMI at its offices in USA. Exams can be sat at various locations in Ireland and at locations in many other countries (see below). To apply to sit the Certification exam, please download the application form from the PMI web site. Note if you are a member, it costs much less. The application must be mailed to the PMI (not faxed). And should be received at the PMI well before the date you wish to take the exam.

Why should I join?

If you apply to become a member of the Ireland Chapter of the PMI, you are provided with a "network of expertise" in the Irish area. Chapters provide face-to-face contact with peers from various organisations and industries working in the project management field. The Irish Chapter's focus is to advance the mission and objectives of PMI by promoting project management professionalism within local businesses, universities and professional organisations in the chapter area. Project management professionalism is enhanced through chapter activities, meetings and other educational programs designed to strengthen the knowledge, awareness and understanding of project management principles, tools and techniques.

How many Irish based local members of the PMI are there?

Currently there are over 700 members affiliated to the Ireland Chapter of PMI.

Is joining PMI going to help my career in Project Management?

Members have the opportunity to network with other professionals working in project management, share ideas and experiences, access industry information, attend seminars and workshops and socialize with peers by joining PMI's component organizations. Through joining the PMI you can enhance your project management knowledge and increase your skills, prepare for the Project Management Professional Certification Examination, or earn valuable Professional Development Units (PDUs) toward maintaining your PMP Certification. PMI members can take advantage of these opportunities at discounted rates through the PMI Seminars World Program and the new e-symposia, PMI's Virtual Seminars. For additional educational opportunities, search the online database of PMI recognized Registered Education Providers and the online list of academic institutions offering degrees in project management.

Do I have to be a Project Manager to join?

To join the Project Management Institute, you do not have to be a Project Manager. PMI is a great forum that endorses standard Project Management principles. It gives people the opportunity to network and participate with Project Managers from many different disciplines, working on a wide variety of project scopes, schedules and sizes. However, to become certified as a PMP (Project Management Professional), you will need to have obtained a certain number of hours work experience as a Project Manager to comply.

Can I become certified as a PMP without joining PMI?

Yes. Anyone who is currently working in the project management field, or who has done so in the past is eligible to become a PMP. Membership in the Project Management Institute is not required. However, membership in the association will keep you abreast of current developments in the field, increase your understanding of project management concepts which you may not use in your day-to-day activities, and help you achieve qualifying points towards PMP Certification.

Where can I do the PMP exam in Ireland?

The PMP exam is now undertaken electronically. There is only one test centre in Ireland.  The address is:

If you are a member, do you then have access to proprietary info on websites/publications, that you wouldn't get otherwise?

Members receive subscriptions to PMI's periodicals. Take advantage of the wealth of information sent to you in the monthly issues of PM Network', PMI's sought-after professional magazine; quarterly issues of the Project Management Journal'; and PMI Today', the monthly newsletter of the Project Management Institute. Members also receive discounts on professional books, training tools and resources available through PMI's online bookstore. We also provide members the materials from events run by the chapter.

What are the networking opportunities?

The Ireland Chapter of PMI provides a forum for prospective and experienced project managers across a wide range of professional disciplines to exchange ideas and/or horror stories. Opportunities to learn from experienced PM's on best practice incorporated within the PMI's internationally accredited Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide. Opportunities to promote the PMI within both established and aspiring project organisations and the value of obtaining the internationally recognised PMP qualification.

I can't find certain features for chapter members. Where are they?

If you are a member of the Chapter you should have a username and password to the site. You will need to login first to see the materials available to members. If you have any issues, please contact the membership officer.
